A recent survey by the National Institute on Aging reports that an estimated 83% of older Americans want to continue to remain in their own homes even when they need assistance.  Dear as they are, most homes were not designed and built for the needs of aging residents.  Homes were built for growing families, not for growing old, with the reduced mobility and safety issues inherent with aging.

Current statistics show that the majority of elderly will do nothing about unsafe living conditions until it's too late.  In Wisconsin, in 2009 alone, there were approx. 22,000 accidental falls occurring in the home that resulted in an elderly person being hospitalized.  Sadly, too many of these people never returned home.  The typical procession is to a rehab facility, then to a nursing home because their own home couldn't accommodate their new mobility needs.

Adaptable Home Design can help you identify the risk factors in your home and suggest ways to make your environment safer.  The cost of home modifications is dependent on individual needs and circumstance as well as the existing homes design and condition but even low cost improvements can make a difference and save resources, especially if they help avoid a fall and injury.
